Addicts of Catan
Ugh. I’m addicted. I’ve always loved Settlers/Seafarers of Catan, but when Jeremy came to visit, he taught our “usual” Catan group how to play Knights and Cities. WAY cool. It’s especially fun for those of us who are addicts because it’s added a whole new dimension with all kinds of cool new rules and strategies to fuss over.
While we were playing, Jeremy casually mentioned Wan Catan. We were all especially interested because sometimes it is just not an option for gathering a group, especially with kids. School nights, nap times, bed times, grumpy moods, diaper changes… these all get in the way of smooth game flow. It’ll be even harder when everyone moves, too, and not just that, but it would be nice to play with other people on occasion, too. Well, Andrea was kind enough to find the download(s) and we played together online the other night. I am very impressed. There are some sounds I plan on changing (some of the sounds are entirely TOO goofy and others are actually too subtle) but for the most part, the game kicks butt. Very nice.
So um, yeah, if anyone out there reads this and downloads the game and wants to play, just let me know and we’ll figure something out.
Oh… and for those who aren’t interested in downloading anything or fussing with opening ports in their firewall and all that, or else if you just don’t have anyone to play with and don’t feel like soliciting for players on your website (ho hum) there’s also a java version of Settler’s of Catan with bots (so you can play against the computer, so to speak).
Soon to come… an email support group just for us addicts. *snicker*

This poor sorry ole page gets so many hits for people looking for ports on their firewall to adjust for playing WanCatan. Most of the time, I just get hits but no one bothers to ask, but since someone was kind enough to actually drop email and request the information I sent it to him, and now, I suppose, I’ll be kind enough to post it here.
When you install wancatan, if you look in the directory it creates there’s a WanCatan.cfg file. At the bottom of the file, (4 lines from the bottom) there’s a line that says port=20931. You can change that number to any port you want. This tells the game what port you’re running on so you can pick any port you want and configure the firewall to match or else use the 20931 default.
Got it? Good. Oh. And there is no more “Addicts of Catan” clique anymore. No one joined, so I shut it down.

Hey I want to play wan catan online to play cities and knights, but I don’t know anything about configuring firewalls and stuff. I have 56K modem and I can find my IP, but when I host and try and have someone else connect to me, nothing happens. You mention the port thing in this web page, but I don’t know how to do that exactly. Could you let me know please! I really want to play, but can’t get it to work. Thanks a lot!

I can’t find a working install of WanCatan anywhere. Can you point me to one?

Addicted? Me? Not at all. Just because I was up at 2:30 in the morning playing WanCatan by myself… that doesn’t make me an addict. I can quit whenever I want to. Yes I can. I really can.
