Crochet Club
First things first… today is Mother’s Day - and Devon’s birthday. Yep, for the second time in his life, the two fell together… and for the second time in his life I wasn’t able to spend his birthday with him. On Mother’s Day. I’m not happy. Actually, I shouldn’t say I don’t get to spend the day with him, as eventually today he’ll be home, but most of the day will have been spent at Campboree. (Whoever planned this was a dummy.)
So, on a wild hair I bought some yarn. I already had a crochet hook and a tinsy bit of knowledge, but I also bought a little “kit” complete with a book of instructions, different sized hooks, etc. The little thought itching at the back of my head was that I was going to learn to make granny squares and/or teach Jenica some basic crochet stuff to entertain her this weekend. Because. Well. Because this weekend was a rough one and I knew it was going to be rough so I figured filling it with something (anything) would be a good idea.
I bought all this on Thursday so that night I sat down to teach Jenica and Devon. (Sebastian wasn’t interesting.) Devon picked it up pretty quickly, but Jen was struggling. During the process, Devon goes, “Rule #1 of Crochet Club: Don’t talk about Crochet Club.” I almost peed myself laughing. God, I love that kid.
On Friday night, Jen and I watched a movie (Tuck Everlasting) and though she’d long since given up on the whole crochet thing, I fussed and worked and finally figured out how to make granny squares. I’m oddly proud of this sad accomplishment, mostly because I taught myself, I guess. I don’t have a clue if I’ll ever DO anything with the dumb things, but at least I know how to make them, now.
I’m not hot on the colors (they’re nice, but I just picked this one skein of yarn up for practice) so maybe I’ll hit the store and buy some colors I actually like. I seem to recall owing CMTRM an afghan anyway.
